Values

Our values reflect the culture that the KIYO teams around the world live and express each and every day. They align with our mission and guide us in how we act, how we treat each other, and how we engage with others. Our values are the foundations of our integrity framework. They have been developed and validated across the different countries where we work and apply in each of these contexts.

We are all responsible for protecting these values and adhering to the code of conduct. Working for or with KIYO means putting these values into practice: walk your talk.

  • We are open and actively look to learn from others and share our expertise.
  • We choose collaboration and dialogue in all our interactions.
  • We build bridges across borders & between people.
  • We communicate in a transparent, honest and respectful way.
  • We create a safe space where everyone can be themselves, has a sense of belonging, freely voices ideas and opinions and really feels included.
  • We enable participation of all by respecting and valuing diverse identities, talents and experiences.
  • We encourage the potential in each person and celebrate their growth and success.
  • We aim for long-term impact through appropriate and durable solutions that contribute to a more just society.
  • We continuously remind ourselves to be aware of what we are doing, and take responsibility for it.
  • We learn by doing, we take time to reflect and are constantly improving driven by an eagerness to do better every time.
  • We can make mistakes as long as we learn from them.
  • We dare to be creative and are unafraid to try new things.

Integrity Framework

Any concerns or incidents regarding integrity will be treated confidentially and can be reported using the following form:

It is important to recognise that integrity issues can occur in all parts of life as well as in every organisation. KIYO strives for a professional and ethical organisational culture where everyone recognises the importance of ethical behaviour and the reporting on any integrity violation. We believe it is of the utmost importance to have a clear framework to:

  • Make integrity part of KIYO’s identity and culture
  • Take our responsibility in handling our resources the best way possible
  • Be transparent on the minimal expectations regarding integrity
  • Prevent as much as possible wrongdoings
  • Clarify how to deal with integrity breaches

Code of Conduct

A code of conduct is in place to guide our processes and day to day decisions. Based on the value statement, the code describes basic principles of ethical behaviour and conduct and should guide all members of the General Assembly, Governance Board, Director, staff, volunteers, interns, partners and others involved with KIYO in their thoughts, decisions and actions.

The code of conduct forms the basis of KIYO's integrity framework which addresses:

  1. The creation of an integrity culture within the organisation through means of preventive measures, the endorsement of the code of conduct and cycles of evaluation and adaptation (prevention).
  2. The handling of integrity breaches through a complaints procedure (response). All staff, administrators, volunteers, interns and those otherwise involved with KIYO have a fundamental moral obligation to report any concern or reasonable suspicion of a breach of integrity, whether financial or moral, or related to the safeguarding of children and youth that is directly related to the organisation, or indirectly within our programmes or through our work with partners.

Child & Youth safeguarding

As children and youth are KIYO’s final target group, they deserve specific attention because of their vulnerable position. KIYO considers all forms of abuse towards children and youth to be unacceptable, and recognises that it has a duty to safeguard children and youth – that is to keep them safe, promote their wellbeing and protect them from harm.  A Child and Youth Safeguarding Policy is in place to ensure the highest standards of professional and personal practices to create a safe and protective environment for children and youth within our programmes. The policy regulates and provides guidance on how to prevent harm to children and youth in relation to our work and outlines the measures in place to respond appropriately and consistently when safeguarding concerns arise. The policy is an integral part of the KIYO Integrity Framework. A specific child and youth safeguarding code of conduct is in place which sets out responsibilities for safeguarding children and youth and specific expectations of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
