KIYO has been working in Rio de Janeiro since 2003. There too many children and youth are victims of violence by the drug lords or the police, as well as victims of illegal detention, child labour and even murder. With our programme in Brazil, we work on our four domains of empowerment:
Through our partnership with AMAR, we increase opportunities of youth living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to participate in professional courses and to find a decent job and hence a way out of their vicious circle of poverty and criminality.
With our partner SER we work on personal development within and outside the school context through their social circus methodology. This way of working is based on Paulo Freire's pedagogy and is used to tackle problems of discrimination, crime, school dropout, violence and substance abuse, among others.
Together with our youth-led organisation YOUCA Brasil, we inspire youth from all backgrounds to organise themselves and develop their capacities to become active global citizens. We train young leaders to engage in advocacy through their participation in youth parliaments at the local and national levels.
