KIYO has been operating in the Philippines since the early 2000s. We have evolved from residential care programmes on juvenile justice to a focus on empowering youth so that they can realise their rights themselves. Due to economic deprivation and social discrimination, many children and youth live in vulnerable and unsafe conditions. In addition, there is an ongoing shrinking of the democratic space for civil society participation and people's right to self-expression and dissent. With our programme in the Philippines, we contribute to our four empowerment domains:
Together with our partner Bidlisiw, we increase opportunities of youth in vulnerable situations to access decent jobs through participation in professional courses with special attention to the development of life skills. Through our partnership with CYC, we strengthen the capacities of youth organisations to effectively advocate for the rights of indigenous children and youth. We also guide teachers and students together with our partner PETA in using creativity and imagination to address social issues and express themselves through inclusive theatre arts.
