Lauria Gatoni

I am Lauria, a lawyer from Ghent with Burundian roots.

Involving myself for the cause of children and youth, especially the ones living in the most vulnerable situations, is something I find extremely important. As part of my thesis, I decided to investigate how children growing up in vulnerable situations could no longer enjoy their right to education during the corona pandemic.

I also co-founded Umoja, the first African student association in Ghent. By organising events and advocating for policy changes, we wanted to build a more inclusive higher education.

I strongly believe in KIYO's mission and vision and am glad that north-south cooperation can also be looked at with a critical eye. It is therefore with pride that I start my KIYO journey being the youngest board member.
