The eastern region of DR Congo has been in armed conflict for decades, with different military groups fighting each other. This has major consequences for children and youth: many are orphaned, exploited or abused. Children and youth go to work to survive, are recruited by military groups or end up in mines. Girls and young women are often victims of sexual exploitation. With our programme in DR Congo, we contribute to these three areas of empowerment:
KIYO and its partner ASCEN invest in training and skills development of youth to strengthen their socio-economic resilience and employment opportunities. With our partner ADED, we contributed to making agriculture attractive again as a decent and sustainable source of income for youth, especially for girls. Together with our previous partner, the youth organisation PAE, we used radio programming as a powerful tool to give children and youth a voice and empower them to stand up for themselves and defend their rights.
