Burundi

“As a young single mother, I was marginalised within my community and lived in isolation. By joining the Saving & Loan Group, I was able to open up to other youth of my age and feel again part of my community.”

YOUTH EDUCATION iN burundi.

According to the 2022 Human Development Index, Burundi ranks 187th out of 191 countries. In addition to continuing political instability, more than 65% of its population lives below the poverty line. Poverty results in children and youth dropping out of school and engaging in income-generating activities to support their families. Almost half of the youth aged 15 to 24 are inactive. The majority of these live in urban areas. The main causes of this high youth unemployment are poor education, domestic work (especially for women), disability and the mismatch between the professional competencies sought and the availability of technical and vocational training. With our programme in Burundi, we work on our four domains of empowerment:

In Burundi we collaborate with our partners APRODEM, Biraturaba and JSBM on strengthening school structures to increase participation and empowerment of students. Together with our partners FVS and Biraturaba, we focus on economic empowerment of youth through among others the set-up of community-based saving & loan groups. We also invest in social cohesion through the creation of peace clubs where youth focus on contributing to positive change in their communities as active citizens.
